Low risk patients do not (see <a href=\"https:\/\/edren.org\/ren\/handbook\/transplant-handbook\/immunosuppression-protocol\/\">immunosuppressive protocols<\/a>).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #993300;\">Dose:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">20mg given 2 hours prior to transplantation<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">20mg given on day 4 post transplant<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">(The first dose must not be administered unless it is absolutely certain that the patient will receive the graft)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #993300;\">Reconstitution:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">5ml water for injection (provided) should be added to the vial containing the Basiliximab powder<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Shake the vial gently to dissolve the powder<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">The solution should be used immediately (it can be stored for 24hours in the fridge or 4 hours at room temperature)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #993300;\">Administration:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">There are two possible routes of administration:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Intravenous bolus injection<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Intravenous infusion over 20-30 minutes. (Final volume of at least 50ml using sodium chloride 0.9% or dextrose 5%)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #993300;\">Compatibility:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Basiliximab should not be mixed with other medicines\/substances and should always be given through a separate infusion line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #993300;\">Adverse Effects:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Severe acute hypersensitivity reactions have been observed both on initial exposure and re-exposure to basiliximab. These include anaphylactoid-type reactions. If severe hypersensitivity reaction occurs, therapy with basiliximab must be permanently discontinued and no further dose administered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #993300;\">Side Effects:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Basiliximab does not appear to add to the background of side effects seen in organ transplantation patients as a consequence of their underlying disease and concurrent administration of immunosuppressants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Basiliximab (Simulect) Indication: All standard risk patients receiving kidney and\/or pancreas transplant.
