Microscopic haematuria<\/a> is discussed elsewhere.<\/p>\n

Macroscopic<\/span><\/strong> haematuria carries different connotations. In haematuria clinics, about one in three cases are associated with malignancy somewhere in the urinary tract. Nephritis is a rare cause.<\/p>\n

Of the causes of haematuria listed in the diagram in our patient leaflet<\/a> on haematuria, some are particularly likely to cause macroscopic haematuria:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Malignancy<\/span><\/strong><\/td>\nof kidney, collecting system or bladder<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Acute Nephritis<\/span><\/strong><\/td>\nsevere crescentic nephritis<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
<\/td>\nacute post-streptococcal nephritis (usually pink or smoky rather than frank blood)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
<\/td>\nIgA nephropathy in young people, usually with an acute respiratory infection (usually pink or smoky rather than frank blood)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Infection<\/span><\/strong><\/td>\nusually requires severe cystitis<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Rare infarction<\/span><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
Could it be caused by nephritis?<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n

Ask about reduced urine output (oliguria). Refer to risk factors for renal disease<\/a> (from the guideline on microscopic haematuria).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A clinic for patients with macroscopic haematuria is run by the Department of Urology at WGH.
\nFlexible cystoscopy is carried out in the clinic followed by IVU, urine cytology and further investigations arranged as required.
