However severe oliguria or polyuria imply pathology and require further investigation.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Too much<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Difficult to set an upper limit of normal, but 4 litres is a lot.\u00a0 Causes:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>Osmotic diuresis &#8211; diabetes mellitus<\/li>\n<li>Loss of antidiuretic hormone (ADH) &#8211; cranial diabetes insipidus (head injury, etc)<\/li>\n<li>Failure to respond to ADH &#8211; nephrogenic diabetes insipidus<\/li>\n<li>Excessive intake &#8211; psychogenic polydipsia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Too little<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>300-500 mls of urine is needed to excrete adequate amounts of solute each day.\u00a0 Less than this is therefore oliguria.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>Physiological response to severe dehydration<\/li>\n<li>Hypoperfusion of the kidneys &#8211; hypotension or damage\/occlusion to renal artery\/aorta<\/li>\n<li>Acute Renal Failure (see <a href=\"http:\/\/edren.org\/ren\/education\/textbook\/arf-aki\/\">Approach to the patient with oliguria<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Urine volume is a poor guide to renal function as it is physiologically variable and 24-hour collections are often erroneous.
