Renal Unit

One of Willem Kolff’s first dialysis machines, made in 1945. It was never used in Edinburgh, but you can read about our history

The Edinburgh Renal Unit provides a renal service for the population of the Lothian and Borders region, about 850,000 people. This includes dialysis, acute renal failure, and outpatient services for renal disease.

We provide top class training for medical, nursing and other staff, have major research groups looking at causes and treatments for kidney disease, and we produce this website and its educational sister-site edrep.

The Edinburgh Transplant Unit provides a renal transplant service for the East of Scotland (see pages on the Renal Transplant unit), and Liver, Pancreas and Islet transplant services for the whole of Scotland.
